An outstanding site

The area concerned by our study is 25 km north-west of the centre of KIEV, on a former alluvial plain.
The land, 1.5 km long and 1 km wide, is criss-crossed by small rivers, former canals and lakes.

A new approch

Unlike the residential developments currently being built in the Ukraine, which pay little attention to the local context and the country’s future energy needs, Groupe H has convinced the Client of the need to develop the design of the new town of 6,000 inhabitants in line with three guiding principles:

Respect for the surrounding setting
The variety and “permeability” of building structures
Rationalised energy needs and network management.

As a result of their attentiveness and open-mindedness, the Client and his teams enjoyed excellent, fruitful relations with Groupe H which led to the finalisation of an innovative development plan that marks a new stage in the sustainable development of the Ukraine !

An enhanced site

Groupe H used a combination of map analysis and on-site studies to explain the site’s quality and potential to the Client. It demonstrated the advantages of retaining the woodland and water networks on the site. Then, by adding in a road system adapted to the contours of the land, and linking this up to the local road and rail system, it was able to propose an urban structure on a human scale and adapted to ease of movement.

The parks contain a number of lakes and restored natural canals, which are also used to manage and retain rain water and to irrigate public and private gardens.

The road network is designed with care and in great detail, from the main roads providing a public transport service by bus to the roads leading to housing areas, based on the concept of “shared space” (see “Responsive Environments”, Bentley, Alcock, Murrain, McGlynn, Smith, published by the Architectural Press).
Vehicle and pedestrian routes are kept separate, and cyclists and pedestrians have access to each district via the green belt parks.

Groupe H has also developed innovative water management proposals, from pumping for the drinking water supply (there is no water distribution in the region) to its re-treatment prior to discharge. These have been enthusiastically accepted by the Client. Variations on the energy management system are still under discussion due to uncertainties over energy policy in the Ukraine…
